European traffic planners are dreaming of streets free of rules and directives. They want drivers and pedestrians to interact in a free and humane way, as brethren — by means of friendly gestures, nods of the head and eye contact, without the harassment of prohibitions, restrictions and warning signs.

Call me naive, but I find it difficult to believe that skin colour causes friction in the USA today. All throughout elementary school, highschool, college, and Corporate America, I was never exposed to any verbal or physical skirmishes caused by race. Everything seemed so perfectly integrated until now. Does this mean that I’ve sheltered my awareness? Or does this mean there is a resurgence in the clash of “races”? Perhaps there’s a little of both.
